Canuxploitation

Broadly speaking, low-budget Canadian genre films. I initially (the first 197) limited it to titles reviewed on the wonderful site of the same name but have since expanded to anything else that might fit.

Re: Meta-documentaries/documentaries about documentaries

A decidedly amateur sketch of a sketch of a survey to follow. re arbitrary, see djross's review of Debord's Sur le passage de quelques personnes à travers une assez courte unité de temps (1959), which quotes a passage from the film regarding the inevitable reduction in that "something else": What ma...

Based on an article

https://www.criticker.com/films/?filter=e53566 Films/shows based on a newspaper, magazine, or website article, or essay that may have originated in a book. New Yorker regular David Grann's entertaining collection The Devil and Sherlock Holmes has already produced four movies (five if you count the F...

Cult Movies (Peary)

https://www.criticker.com/films/?filter=e57205 Danny Peary didn't coin the term, but with his three volumes of Cult Movies , published in 1981, 1983, and 1988, he probably contributed more than anyone to its prominence and the first construction of its 'canon'. His somewhat purply criteria: "...spec...

Re: Why do Movies have more ratings?

TV shows were added to Criticker years into the site's existence. There has simply been much less time and opportunity to rate them. Rating TV shows is also different and probably "harder", as the quality of a show during its run, even a one-season show, will obviously vary much more than a film on ...

Filmmaker alternate credits

I'd find it useful to be able to see/add any aliases (or old names or whatever) used by a filmmaker on a particular film, somewhere on the film page. IMDb simply uses (as __________) after their credit, but I know that might be awkward with our current layout. I would also suggest an "also credited ...

Re: Meta-documentaries/documentaries about documentaries

Some points of clarification on issues that may have been lost in my efforts to be pithy rather than comprehensive: - a film that is not fictional is not necessarily a documentary, either. There are other traditions to which it might belong, avant-garde or otherwise--see the structural film collecti...

Re: Meta-documentaries/documentaries about documentaries

My own fault I guess, but that is all well beyond the scope. You will note that I was careful not to use words like "art" or "literature" (let alone music!), for this very reason. If an artist sketches in their private journal is that still art? If you mean to imply that it automatically is, then no...

Re: Based on multiple sources (non-anthology)

Came across an interesting instance I didn't know about-- About Schmidt : Payne's script to About Schmidt was initially an original screenplay written years before Begley's novel was published. According to Payne, his script was about "an old guy who retires, and realizes how much he’s wasted his li...
