Re: Adult Films

Hopefully the restoration of many of the adult titles shows that we are listening to you, and want to do right by our community. If (and when) we make mistakes, we'll do our best to address them, and own up to them. Thank you. I had a midweek day off and so my post turned into a bit of a rant, and ...

Re: Adult Films

Next on the agenda should be films that glorify violence. I'm personally pissed about the titles of Hisayasu Sato, who is a fascinating cult figure and has made complex works of art (considered by some a Japanese Cronenberg) which have been misconstrued to feature hardcore sex scenes. In fact, a lot...

Re: How often do you write Mini-Reviews?

Aye, I watch too many movies and smoke too much weed. I can't remember what I watched in the week unless I check in here, so I have been trying to write something to jog my memory, or just mention the things I like or hate so future me knows.

Re: Who's on your Kumpel list?

My tastes are pretty all over the place, I'll watch basically anything and the process of evaluation I don't understand myself. So I like to keep tabs on a broad cross-section of users who have: similarly idiosyncratic approaches; seem to really know what they like and why; or dabble in the obscure ...

Re: von Trier

Haha. I'm flattered. More of an 'equivalency' argument from my perspective. It is also true that I resent doing useful things, and enjoy justifying a life spent watching films. It may be apocryphal that audiences in 1895 were terrified that the train approaching the screen was going to hit them, but...

Re: von Trier

It is not just a matter of developing an understanding of the technical processes involved in making films, but a matter of understanding how those processes relate to the generation of meaning and significance for the audience. This kind of reminds me of something that came up in studying art hist...

Re: Leaving the key under the doormat/plant

I often come home shitfaced so it's handy to have something to rely on. That said, it's in a place that's easy for me to find, but there's so much random junk on the porch that anyone else would have a hell of a time. :)

Also, I responded to this knowing full well you be phishing, right?

Re: On what basis do you rate films ?

I don't rate a film I have not seen in its entirety. I've so often revised my feelings about a film based on the last 10 or 20 minutes that I can't presume to assign a rating if I haven't seen the whole thing. I actually find it kind of nasty in a way, in poor taste. I don't rate films I saw so long...

Re: The Rev. Al Gore at it again

I think most of these people conflate socialism more with Stalinism (I'm from a country where socialism worked pretty damn well for a while) and the irony is that precisely the gut-wretching reaction some people get when they hear the word is the result of decades of capitalist propaganda, nothing t...

Re: Children being killed....

Not sure I can be bothered trawling through the whole thread to see if it's been mentioned, but just caught Matsumoto's Shura (Demons) and it fits the bill.
