Probable score: 100 !

Wondering how Criticker works, or have a question that doesn't seem to fit under requests or bugs?

Hi Paulofilmo.

Nice to be in your family ;) And Mike Leigh, yeah! He is really great. Unfortunately I cannot watch all the movies by him that can be found on youtube, as I need subtittles because of the working class accent that is very hard to understand for non english people. So sad that Katrin Cartlidge died.
I can follow your ideas, it would be great if we could edit the way you suggest. But you gave me an idea. Yesterday I searched in the database and choosed only movies that are "popular" and "very popular". In this way one can be sure that more than 3 people have rated the movie/show. Probably there will also be enough of high TCIs to give some reliability. At least in theory (I spent some time correcting the wrong predictions among the 80s it came up with).
I know Freaks and geeks, and its really good, but I wouldnt like to reexperience high school time every night. Together looks great (what do you mean by Caution: swedish :-))), is that a bad thing?) Sideways I saw, I would give it 70 I guess.

BTW - at the "update personal information" site, one can choose how many films one should have in common with TCIs. I have set it to 30% which might be to high....I have no idea if this makes it more or less precise in predicitions.

it' s katlin's quote on IMDb that rubs salt in the wound.

Look at the profiles of your best TCIs - are their tastes similar to yours? And perhaps look at the PSIs for films you've already rated.

(what do you mean by Caution: swedish :-))

I got the impression of friendly rivalry on reddit. :D

I'm dreadfully bad at remembering all the implications of raising/lowering FiC percentage. There are already some existing threads on the subject - the user PeaceAnarchy is very good at explaining. I remember raising my own because it seemed to me that some of my higher TCIs hadn't seen a very broad range of films.

I'm going to sleep, but I'll try to think of a more helpful response (forgive me, this one is a bit rubbish).

No, actually, if I look at movies from my best TCIs I mostly find movies that I dont find very appealing. I dont know, of course.

I wonder how to post a screenshot. I would like to post a picture from a movie that I found when clicking PSI in the left column. Up comes a film called The Bridge of Warsaw (1990) with a prob.score 96.
Thanks to your explanation, I could check what data this score was based on. There are only 8-9 people who have seen this movie, of which 3 of them are among my 1000 best TCIs and if I divide their score with 3 I get 80. How can this become 96? It seems totally random to me. Its interesting that there are one of the remaining 5 people (that I dont share taste with) that has given it....96. Seems as criticker has just taken the highest score among everybody who has seen this film and used that as my probable score. No wonder these scores are not reliable......

Ah, ok. Here is the PSI explanation page for the bridge of warsaw. On the right, it should provide an explanation of the where the numbers are coming from. I don't have enough users for this film, but for The Good Wife it says (under 'The Probable Score Indicator', third paragraph):

First, their film tiers are averaged (for example, this is one of faruksongur's Tier 10 films). The resulting Average Tier is then translated into a score, based on your rankings. In your case, an average tier of 6.3 translates to a score of 69.

Does that make sense?

If you open a MovieLens account, I can send you links to the optimised similar films pages. You don't even have to rate anything if you don't want to (I think their overall 'top picks' are fucking woeful).

It's simple enough to do yourself. An example like this has four of your favourite films on the first page.

Wau!!! :o
Are you a genius ?

These movies you have listed there are incredible!
I have seen many of them, and there are several that I had forgot and therefore havent rated. At first I thought it was just my highest rated films that you had pasted, until I saw that many was not on my criticker list and many I didnt know.
In Search of a Midnight Kiss... from the trailor I can see that I would love that comedy (a misantroph seaking a misantroph on a dating site - cant wait!), Garden state (just down my alley!), me and you and everyone we know (have seen it, remember I really liked it), Run lola run (my friends favorite, - but not mine, so its not perfect), and Red rose of cairo (yes, I love Woody, but find this one tame, but woody think of it as one of his best), Lars and the real girl (not so talented film, but great theme, enjoyed it), Far from Heaven (funny that it mentions this one...my friends were surprised that I liked it so much, but I did), Harold and Maude ( yes, yes, that engine seems to be clairvoyant), Venus (was deeply impressed), Another earth (brilliant), Leaving las vegas (one never forget that one), the go getter (right on spot), bagdad cafe, oh and Waking life (mind blowing - think I will see it again - on low speed this time to be able to reflect also), I heart huckabees (This one is very esoteric, only for a small audience, so this engine is clever!), Children of men (must see again, now that we HAVE a refugee crisis), Open your eyes (must see again), .... just to mention a few on the list.

And thanks for the full explanation of PSI. NOW I understand how they do it. And its a logical way to translate between scores. Only thing is that they should not give a score with only 3 TCIs, or let you choose how many, as you suggested.

Cant see your link to the example on movielens as I am not a member - yet! I am tomorrow :-)
Strange if their top picks are so bad, if they are so good at what you showed me.
Wonder if they have TV shows also.....

Well, thank you!

It's been brought up as a feature request before. As you mentioned, playing with the Popularity filter should give more reliable results. However, if the users with the best TCIs don't reflect your own taste, then no amount of filter-tinkering will help. Take a look at this thread to get an idea of what TCI values are "normal" among forum users. If your best TCI is above 2.0, then you're probably an extra special snowflake. ;)

They have all the data, they just don't provide recommendations via that method (frustratingly; I think it would be interesting!). The "The Wizard" recommender isn't bad for me, but wasn't at all useful with your data.
They have a handful of TV shows, but not established (with tags) like their films.

This seems like it has more potential to provide similar films, compared to criticker's usefulness as a rating predictor. I feel like a problem I have with Criticker that keeps it from doing the magical thing I want it to is that there's no way to build you own subgenre of ratings, or rate movies on multiple topics (Speed Racer was mostly terrible, but had amazing visuals and action, etc) Whereas Movie Lens I just asked what has more action and is more visually appealing than Fury Road, and it gave back Pacific Rim. There's no way Pacific RIm is close to as good a story, but if I want more spectacle that's certainly true.

Is there any way to automatically copy ratings from criticker to movielens? Any tips to optimize use of that site?

It reminds me of clerkdogs' film DNA - you could move a slider along to find films that were more Cerebral, or that had less of a Hollywood Feel, etc.

A bit of a tangent, the following thread touches on this subject. Sadly LordofDance deleted his everything, so the OP is gone, and you can only read him in quotes. And ignore my posts (I flail autistically without contributing anything):
Movie Watcher Auteur. I don't know what ML would make of LoD - my guess: the necessary tags would be too subtle or eccentric to exist.

Any tips to optimize use of that site?

I haven't used the site much, but will report back if I find anything interesting. If it's not too obvious: selecting 'show both rated and unrated movies' will show you how well the recommendations are working.

Is there any way to automatically copy ratings from criticker to movielens?

I don't think so.
Criticker can import from IMDb. Perhaps it would be easy to reverse the process (as ML imports .csv from IMDb). So, might be worth a feature request.
