Adult Films

Wondering how Criticker works, or have a question that doesn't seem to fit under requests or bugs?

Just noticed they're missing from the database as well. I'm assuming (and hoping) it's just a glitch.

Just saw they removed the adult films toggle from the profile options. Uh-oh. Not a good sign.

It'd be real shame to see this site take a step backwards and re-implement censorship. I've been a sponsor for years and, if they have, that'll be the end of my financial support here.

Two of my previous ratings are gone since the movies have been (apparently) deleted. One was Breaking Point (1975). I'm trying to figure out what the other one was. I also rate on IMDB, and I checked my list there, but the only two "Adult" films there were Breaking Point again and Taking Tiger Mountain (1983)(which is still on Criticker, I guess since no one ever added the genre "Adult" to it). So I don't know what the other film was that was deleted from my ratings on Criticker.

Hey all,

Yes, you've noticed that we've made some changes to the site, to clamp down a little bit on adult films. We're trying to restrict this new policy to titles that are clearly "porn" -- most titles will be fine.

We went through an initial cleanup, targeting adult films with very few ratings -- these were titles that, in their great majority, were simply hard-core porn.

After doing a review of the site, and the ratings associated with pornography, we came to the realization that the inclusion of such titles was simply not contributing in any positive way to the site. Including the "adult" distinction complicates the code, slows things down, and scares off both new users and advertisers.

Titles which were previously classified as adult, will just be in the regular database from now on, so in many ways, this opens Criticker up more than ever before, rather than "restricts" it. A very small percentage of our users ever bothered to (a) add their birthdate and then (b) allow adult titles, so the majority now have more titles available than before.

Some titles seem to have been unfairly swept up in this change, will there be any reconsiderations? the titles that come to mind are those found in https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217444/ as well as these https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330775/movieconnections/

Thanks for the update.

Just to soapbox for a moment: I guess to me there really isn't anything pornographic about a database listing. It's not like the info on the page is pornographic. It's just text. I guess some cover art might show a (god forbid) boob or something. But, one could say some of the non-adult listings text within the Criticker database is more triggering than an "adult" listing. Look at the VERY adult language in some of the reviews... to each his own, but it'd be hard for me to justify that some of the triggering language in reviews is less offensive than a harmless database listing of Peter De Rome's "Daydreams from a Crosstown Bus." I mean, there's even a collection called "Profanity in the Title" https://www.criticker.com/films/?filter=e5444 - Do advertisers know that page exists? Quick, take it down before they see it!

The admins absolutely have every right to deem what they consider "hard-core porn" and remove it - but, unless one interviewed every single filmmaker to ask them if their filmmaking intention was/is "hard-core porn," how would one truly know? I could be wrong, but I don't think Arthur J. Bressan Jr. would say he was setting out to make hard-core porn with his films, yet some of his "adult" titles are gone as well.

Truth is, with this act of censorship, I really only lost about 6 titles or so from my collection, but, on principle: Erotica is made to titillate, horror is made to scare, comedies are made to amuse; they're all human emotions. This age-old cycle of deeming erotica as inappropriate or unworthy of inclusion, ironically, just keeps giving erotica all the power every time.

Wow
I can´t believe this decision from Criticker.
The can of worms you just opened up by following imdb´s totally random
use of adult film versus non adult film when it comes to "exploitation" films.
This will become a total mess.

As a swede myself I will give 3 swedish examples ( Flossie, Thriller - en grym film, Breaking Point)
3 films with "hardcore sex scenes" that leaves nothing to your imagination.

All of them on imdb ( 1 labeled adult horror thriller) ( 1 drama romance) (1 crime drama thriller)
One of them is now banned from Criticker. (just 100% random Flossie/Breaking Point)

This might seem like a very small problem. I think I´ve only lost 7 of my 7000 ratings.
But this is important to me and i whole heartedly agree with everything said above by lineuphere
The consecuense for me will be to stop rating, stop contributing to the database, and stop using Criticker over all.
Letterboxd went in the totally different direction when it comes to erotica, but to each their own.
The owners of Criticker have made a tremendous work with this website and they must do what is right and best for them.

Dude not cool I just lost 40 some odd titles of the adult kind whose very existence in the first place gleefully defies the kind of Jerry Falwellian censorship plight that now blights this once revered institution.
Look and listen no further than the sage wisdom of the Diggler Diviner on the legitimacy of the genre as a genre.

Good to know that Mubi and Letterboxd are still DTF.
