Re: Ranking the Bond films

I'm a huge fan of A View to a Kill, although I'm moderately surprised that Pickpocket loved it, too. It's a really well-made, fantastic action movie with an epic, globe-trotting scope, and the perfect swan song to the Moore era. (Who was 58 when the movie was released!)

The bizarre and unique characters rock (Grace Jones is an underrated hench(wo)man, who I would only rank below Jaws and Oddjob), and it has one of my 3 favorite Bond themes. And this is coming from someone who generally hates 80's pop rock;

There's 2 instances of really odd musical choices in this film. This is the second one, which is just a god awful song. Fuck Duran Duran. Terrible band and song and only famous because everyone was so coked out that no one knew what music was supposed to sound like anymore. The first instance is the opening ski scene they just randomly play California Girls by the Beach Boys as soon as James switches from skis to a makeshift snowboard. That scene just stunk of "can you believe we got the rights to California Girls?"

You sound like Grandpa Carolla here. (Whose rants I enjoy, but not when they're on a subject as fundamentally irrational and impossible to discuss as music) Do you share a love for simplistic, soporiferous 70's singer songwriters, too?

I hate virtually all pop music and don't give a damn about Duran Duran, who might well suck overall. But that one song rocks.

By the way, here are my other two favorites;

I'm a sucker for pure instrumentals.

I think they probably cracked themselves up with that juxtaposition, and decided it was funny enough to put into the movie, people who didn't find it humorous be damned.

Oh man, you are going to fucking hate License to Kill. I agree with your review of The Living Daylights, but it's a masterpiece compared to the next installment, which was by far the worse until Die Another Day. I actually like Timothy Dalton as an actor, but his interpretation of Bond is all wrong. On the bright side, you will enjoy the Bond girl far more than the generic Kara Milvoy. Although admittedly, I was surprised you disliked Milvoy so much, since you enjoyed superior, but still unexceptional blondes Tanya Roberts and Kim Basinger.

Kara Milvoy had the body of a child whereas Roberts and Basinger were actually women. Skinny and blonde doesn't necessarily mean hot
