Ha. I was just coming to concede defeat in my efforts to see 10% of the titles in this collection before it reached 5000 films (see previous page). Thought I was still safe to do it gracefully at 4970 films.

I got up to almost 9% before the flurry that started at about 4850. Now at 426/5001, or 8.5%. For my total ratings, 6.6%.

86 new titles total. This includes 9 shorts and 2 Black Mirror episodes, but also several miniseries. (And much more in series televison that I haven't rated.)

Highlights:

The Company of Strangers a/k/a Strangers in Good Company (Cynthia Scott, 1990, Canada) 95
Loyalties (Anne Wheeler, 1987, Canada) 85
Evolution (Lucile Hadzihalilovic, 2016, France) 85
Fallen Champ: The Untold Story of Mike Tyson (Barbara Kopple, 1995, USA, TV, doc) 85
Dance, Girl, Dance (Dorothy Arzner, 1940, USA) 85
Change of Heart (Anne Wheeler, 1985, Canada, TV) 85
Black Mirror: Arkangel (Jodie Foster, 2017, UK, TV) 85
Deep Water (Louise Osmond, Jerry Rothwell, 2006, UK, doc) 80
Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession (Alexandra Cassavettes, 2004, USA, doc) 80
Variety (Bette Gordon, 1983, USA) 80
Handsome Harry (Bette Gordon, 2009, USA) 75
Nattlek (Mai Zetterling, 1966, Sweden) 75
Artist on Fire: Joyce Wieland (Kay Armatage, 1987, Canada, doc) 75
Empty Suitcases (Bette Gordon, 1980, USA) 70

The most rewarding part was further exploring the work of Anne Wheeler. Bittersweet, though: most of her complex and lovingly made films have never even made it to DVD inside her own country despite being showered with acclaim and awards. This is not an uncommon fate for Canadian filmmakers.

I honestly never focused on the gender of director or cared much about that. I've seen 190 which is 3,87% of all my ratigns, I loved some of them and i couln't stop recommending breathtaking Seven Beauties by Lina Wertmüller or recent Booksmart by debuting Olivia Wilde. In total, 36 are in my tier 9-10, which is 3,68% of those ratings. Interestingly, exactly 36 are also in my tier 1-2 :)

6.25% exactly. I didn't plan for that but the even fraction is very satisfying. I'm expecting the proportion to drop since I'm currently on a binge of B&W Hollywood films.

Two tier 10 films directed by women: The Matrix and Shrek.
4 1/2 years later and down to 5.8%

My 5 Highest-rated Films by Women:

1: Paris is Burning (95)
2: Alias Grace (93)
=3 The Matrix (90)
=3 Shrek (90)
5: The Virgin Suicides (88)

Lowest Rated:

Triumph of the Will (35)

As of 2024: 5.79%, or 318 of 5488 that I've seen (up again, from 4.76% in January 2020)

This is likely due to the fact that I've been watching more modern movies in recent years.
