It still needs 109 additional films to catch up to "boobs".

One mistake I noticed: It has the three films of Emanuele Crialese, who is a man.

Anyway, I thought I'd get in before we get any of the sort of bullshit that the last thread about female directors threw up. Of the 110 (a shamefully low number) of these films that I've seen, eight rank in my top tier. These are:

Alle Anderen (Everyone Else)
Aquamarine
Lost in Translation
Meshes of the Afternoon
Near Dark
Persepolis
Water Lilies
Wendy and Lucy

With one exception, all of these films were directed by directors who are still active, which suggests there is still some great hope for female-helmed pictures. Maren Ade and Celine Sciamma, especially, seem capable of establishing themselves as two of the premier directors of the coming years. Water Lilies and Everyone Else are extraordinary, emotionally naked movies told from distinctly feminine perspectives.

I have seen 48 films in the collection, and the average of those scores is definitely lower than my overall mean.

T10 films: 3/48

T1 films: 11/48

T10-T8 films: 9/48, roughly 18%

T1-T3 films: 24/48, 50%

I would hope the point isn't just to see films by female directors, but rather, talented female directors. Lina Wertmuller is one of my 5 favorite directors ever and Katheryn Bigelow is in my top 15. Unfortunately, there are also an incredible number of hacks making awful romcom and romantic garbage. There are 4 Catherine Hardwickes for every Katheryn Bigelow.
