Different Versions of the Same Game

Post by Velvet Crowe »

One of the pet peeves I have with adding games onto Criticker is that the mods seem to take issue with me separating handheld versions of the exact same title, even if they're completely different games. I've just put out Tarzan on the GBC to be added to the site, but I get the sense it's going to get denied because it's the same tie in title as the PS1 version.

We should honestly allow and make different entries for handheld titles in circumstances like this. You legit can't drop a review for both the console and handheld versions of a game even if they're literally completely different games. I find that pretty lame.

Splitting the entries would make sense for some of the older games. Because of the system limitations, some ports were... completely different. One example that springs to mind is Dragonflight: MS-DOS version is a 3D flight sim, the SNES version is a overhead shoot-em-up.

Console ports of games such as Ultima 6 were also quite different from the original.

(By the way, off-topic, but I had no idea that Criticker had a game section. It doesn't seem very visible. I only just found it because I Googled for something like 'game recommendations similar sites criticker'.)

Compare Super Robin Hood on ZX Spectrum which is the one available to rate on Criticker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBqK8KIPSvo

to Super Robin Hood from NES https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6FfVo6zwxY

Sorry, but those are two completely different games, it's not only the graphics and sounds that's completely different, the levels are different...

I want to rate Super Robin Hood (NES) and give it decently high rating, but how can I do this if the only game titled Super Robin Hood available to rate is some ZX Spectrum super retro thing I've never played?

I guess this is a problem with user submission and different people considering different levels of variation as the same game or not, coupled with there being no obvious guidelines from Criticker themselves as to what the house rules or whatever regarding things like this are.

However, I have found them to be quite willing to accept suggestions I made in the past to split software variants like this, by submitting (for example in the case you mentioned) a new NES version of the game, and sending a request on the Spectrum version to remove NES explaining it's distinct enough to require a new entry. Alien 3, for example, now has 3 separate entries for dissimilar NES, SNES and Sega versions.
