Re: Guess the movie from the image

Post by philamental »

The game rules haven't been posted in a while and there have been a couple of innocent turn jumps recently so it makes sense to repost them as a refresher ...

1. The player who correctly guesses an image posts the next image. If the player is unable to post the image, they can open their turn up to another player but must then sit the game out until the next correct answer.
2. The Image must be taken from a film that has at least 500 Criticker Ratings (visible at the bottom of the ratings box on each film's criticker page)
3. Only one guess per player per posted image. An incorrect answer blocks the player from guessing again until the next image is posted.
4. Images cannot contain major plot spoilers.
5. The 'Search Google for Image' function is not to be used as it removes the fun and challenge of playing and is therefore against the spirit of the game.

These are the modified thread rules a bunch of us agreed on a few years back when we had a spell where we played quite competitively and having a rule set was more necessary, but they are still useful at keeping us all well mannered today.

With respect 'rule 2', while it was never clarified 'officially' in rule form I don't think anyone has a problem with someone playing a movie that doesn't have 500 ratings just so long as they identify that fact somewhat to help keep the game moving. We brought in the '500 rating' rule to try and limit the number of slow moving tumbleweed rounds which could happen when somebody posted an image from a movie that nobody else had seen. A good example of how to play a more obscure movie would be the recent Fountainhead round where harryouchie included a number of textual hints which prompted good interaction and discussion with the other players which concluded with a triumphant consensus that Ayn Rand should go fuck herself!

Anyway, unless there are objections I propose updating rule 2 to the following for future postings ...

2. The Image should be taken from a film that has at least 500 Criticker Ratings (visible at the bottom of the ratings box on each film's criticker page). If a player wishes to play a film that has less than 500 ratings, they should identify it as such and/or provide additional hints to give the other players a fair chance.

In that case the name of the game must be updated too.

The name can be "Guess the movie from the image and sometimes also from additional hints".

Is it too long?

Well the full game name has always been

Episode XVII: Revenge of the Rise of the Return of the Guess the Movie From the Image Strikes Back

so your name suggestion is still shorter and easier to say than that :P

Any thoughts on 'automatic' turn-forfeiting? How long someone should have to post a new image? I don't actually think four days is too short necessarily

I usually do keep it to 500+, but I just assumed Fountainhead had that many! I guess the market's spoken...

But like the mighty Howard Roark I take back what is mine, NEW IMAGE!!!

Actually... before we hit 1000 pages, do we want to start a new thread with updated rules as the first post?

Also, what's the statute of limitations for taking over an inactive user's turn? I'd argue after a week it's fair territory, but before then we should let the user have a chance to still post something. Not everyone is on this website every single day.

I don't believe this has ever been discussed and we've all seen periods where no image gets posted for weeks where I presume players are politely waiting for the one whose turn it is. I think a week is absolutely long enough to wait and can't imagine anyone being offended if someone took their turn after 7 days of inactivity so I would be in favour of adding that to the rules myself.

As for restarting the thread, I believe this was proposed for similar reasons a few years ago but a number of people pointed out that they liked the fact this is the longest thread on the forums so there wasn't enough support to go ahead and start a new thread. Maybe 1000 pages is the right time to retire the thread though?

if only there was a poll... something that remained active at least until the 1K page... where one could gauge the sentiment scientifically...

if only...
