Yeah I almost brought that up. It is a bit odd. How do you explain it? I find it hard to blame "the Academy." Idris Elba and the Eazy-E guy were nomination quality, but Best Supporting Actor is a stacked category every year, so if you're snubbed there it's tough shit. Best Actor nominations were wide open this year, but Michael B. Jordan isn't a great actor IMO, so I'm not upset about that either. And what other potential nominations were there? It's an industry thing--black people get cast in great roles less often, generally.

Rob Delaney is just so good at the Twitter:
People "'mad" that no black actors were nominated for Oscars seem to be forgetting that racism was cured 12 years ago by the film "Crash."

Clearly a racist conspiracy

That and we elected the first (and last) black lib President for 500 years.

Of the ones nominated, I think Damon should get it, Spotlight, and Walton Goggins should have been nomin8ed for the Sheriff in the Hateful Eight, while the Blanchett, Mara and Redmayne nominations had nothing to do with art, and all to do with politics. I know, I'm such a homophobe. I check under my bed ever night.

Has it always been "cool" to bash the Oscars? It is what it is. I take a mild interest in it year to year. It doesn't happen often(!) but I like seeing a film I enjoyed get awards.

I take perverse pleasure in reading the garbage articles that come out this time every year. Like this one from Daily Beast -
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... lshit.html

Why does The Revenant, or Trumbo, or Bridge of Spies, or Mad Max: Fury Road feature into an awards conversation when Beasts of No Nation, Straight Outta Compton, Tangerine, or Will Smith doesn’t?

Um... I dunno. Because the people voting thought those films were better?

Look at the faces of the people on screen, and then at the people voting for them. It’s simple.

Ah. Right.

This guy isn't too bright. Arguing that Idris Elba deserved a nomination when he isn't even eligible is hilarious. One of the rules of the Oscars is that your film must premiere in theaters before streaming. Therefore, anyone who's movie premieres on Netflix or HBO will never get a nomination.

3. Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category. Nontheatrical public exhibition or distribution includes but is not limited to:
• Broadcast and cable television
• PPV/VOD
• DVD distribution
• Internet transmission

But hey, it's trendy and makes you look progressive to think Elba got snubbed. Did anyone give Kevin Fallon his progressive medal today?

Unless I'm missing something, it was eligible for the Oscars because they specifically had a limited theatrical release in order for it to be eligible. Here's one article about it: http://www.forbes.com/sites/natalierobe ... cf54b26ef9.

From the rule stated, it's a little ambiguous if a simultaneous online and theatrical release could qualify, but certainly everything I've read has interpreted it as eligible. And Netflix appears to have released in theaters specifically for that reason, so I feel like they probably made sure that the movie qualified. But I've been wrong before.

Also, FWIW, I'm not arguing it was snubbed since I haven't even seen it.

Edit: it looks like there was a clarification that specifically allows for simultaneous releases like this to be eligible: http://netflixlife.com/2015/09/11/will- ... my-awards/

Interesting. No idea they did that. Maybe the issue is that almost no one saw the movie and thus couldn't weigh an opinion http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id ... nation.htm

He also uses Rotten Tomatoes to back up his 'argument'
This is similar to what happens at music awards. Some band or artist wins best album, then people jump up and down because X should have won because they sold more albums!
They just don't get it. :x
