How many films can people think of where a bullet is stopped my an item in someone's pocket? I know there are loads but I'm currently struggling to think of many.
The 39 Steps is the earliest incident I can think of it, and then there's Fistful of Dollars (riffed in Back to the Future 3) and there's also Sleepy Hollow.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang had the bullet go through the book in his pocket which was pretty funny.
Any others?

The first one that comes to my mind is the rather obscure film Reckless Kelly where a bullet is stopped by the cross the protagonist is wearing as part of a pilgrim costume.

They do it with a lighter in Hard Boiled and in sin city with a police badge. I know the police badge one has been done in other movies also.

I asked some movie-literate pals yesterday and they came up with a few more:
Octopussy
Batman
Paul
Branded to Kill
Johnny Dangerously
I was also reminded of a The Simpsons episode where Flanders is shot twice but saved by his Bible and piece of Jesus' cross.

That episode's a classic.

They are listed as "Pocket Protector" in tvtropes.com.

I think the best one is in Deadpool 2.

Hot Fuzz comes to mind. Although in that case they only put it in the movie, because it's a popular cliché.
In Rush Hour 2 there's a bundle of bills stopping a spear. Dunno if that counts...

The first one I can think of is in Hard Boiled with the lighter.
The 39 Steps one is a favorite, and it would be cool to think this early Hitch wit example helped popularize the trope.
"And this bullet stuck among the hymns, eh? Well, I'm not surprised, Mr. Hannay. Some of those Calvinist prayers are terrible hard to get through."
