Summary of 2022 viewing

Post by djross »

Below is a summary of my year’s viewing for 2022. A summary of the previous year’s viewing can be found by following this link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9052.

This was the year in which I crossed the 5000-ratings threshold. It was also a year where I made some adjustments to ratings: after sixteen years, it was time to consider whether my scores were consistent across that time period (of course, some arbitrariness and uncertainty is inevitable).

The great discovery of 2022 was The Golden Coach (1953), Jean Renoir's masterpiece. Perhaps the reception of this movie was held back somewhat at the time of release by the fact that Anna Magnani’s English is sometimes a bit difficult to understand (according to Renoir, she learned the language specifically in order to make the film). Nevertheless, her performance is terrific. The film looks great on Blu-ray, but that disc was produced in France and lacks English subtitles: the best possible option is to find a way to add the Criterion DVD subtitles to an HD file of the movie. It can be done, and the results are superb.

i saw around 250-300 films last year, not sure on the exact number as i haven't logged all of my rewatches and i tend to post ratings in delayed batches so i'm not precisely sure when the cut-off was (although i am certain i watched The Last Days of Disco in December '21 despite rating in Jan, it'd be top 5 otherwise). this is probably close to the most ever in a year though, and i've actually really enjoyed it for the most part, probably because i've really been picking and choosing stuff that interests me. i haven't seen much new stuff so won't be making a 2022 list, i do plan on catching up with anything of interest though.

2320 was my total at the end of 2022 (not including TV series).

top 10 first time watches:
1. Saint Jack
2. They Might Be Giants
3. Times Square
4. Γλυκιά Συμμορία [Sweet Bunch]
5. Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs
6. Nothing But a Man
7. Out of the Blue
8. The Young Girls of Rochefort
9. Wild River
10. Blonde Death

bottom 5 first time watches:
1. Moonfall
2. Jurassic World Dominion
3. No One Lives
4. The Chronicles of Riddick
5. Der Rechte Weg [The Right Way]

most notable rewatch rises:
Crash, Exotica, The Apartment, Barry Lyndon, After Hours, Yearning, Pierrot Le Fou, A Hero Never Dies and The Straight Story were all upgraded to my favourites (90+ percentile)

top filmmakers at the end of '22:
(10+ films) 1) lynch; 2) scorsese; 3) leigh; =4) kiyoshi kurosawa; =4) fassbinder; 6) to; 7) ford; 8) hong; 9) cronenberg; 10) carpenter
(5+ films) 1) cassavetes; 2) lynch; 3) bogdanovich; 4) n. ray; 5) p. t. anderson; 6) malick; 7) w. anderson; 8) scorsese; 9) hartley; 10) m. mann

top TCIs at the end of '22:
1. Tomhet; 2. iconogassed; 3. frg; 4. jethro; 5. DerDude; 6. llama; 7. theficionado; 8. luismomm; 9. hulot; 10. O_o; 11. drstrangeluv; 12. oddis87; 13. xinet; 14. irrelephant; 15. paah; 16. drillakiller; 17. Groooan; 18. TJ Ximenez; 19. landpwner; 20. Nilbogsavant

compared to 2016 when i seemingly last posted my list: 1 and 3 are the same, 6, 8, 9 and 10 are new entries. Groooan has dropped from 4 to 17, iconogassed has risen from 5 to 2, paah dropped from 6 to 15, DerDude rose from 7 to 5, jethro from 8 to 4, mattburgess fell from 10 to 91(!). benrag was 9th, i assume a name change as they've vanished.

top PSIs at the end of '22 (6+ popularity, all 7/95th percentile):
1) napoleon; 2) as i was moving...; 3) late spring; 4) nostos: il ritorno; 5) children of paradise; 6) the mother and the whore; 7) news from home; 8) some came running; 9) tie xi qu: west of the tracks; 10) war and peace

Conclusion
2022 was a very special year for me. Although I started transitioning in 2021, it was in 2022 that I did the biggest steps. Hormones allowed me to start living as myself and finally become alive and present after a lifelong depersonalized depression. It also allowed me to experience movies in a new way as I became alot more in touch with my emotions and a lot more empathetic.

Maybe this is why I watched more movies than ever before. Mubi was my main source of movies, but I also used Netflix quite a bit. The average rating is very high and would have been higher if my boyfriend didn't have a way different taste in movies than me. The biggest discoveries this year were Kar-Wai Wong and Andrei Tarkovsky. Aside from the movies listed above, "Fallen Angels", "In the mood for Love" and "Stalker" would have made my top 20. I also watched 11 movies by Eric Rohmer, whom I hadn't heard of before 2022. Agnes Varda also felt like a discovery with "Cleo from 5 to 7" only barely missing the top 10.

During the year I had to re-rate lots of old movies. When I was at my lowest point in my life I watched alot of movies from 1930's/1940's and I have always had great nostalgia and good feelings about them. Screwballs and Film Noirs helped me stay alive. In hindsight, altough many are indeed great, I overrated a lot of them and I had to lower them.
