We only allow episodes of particular TV Series -- the kinds that work as standalone movies, like Black Mirror or American Playhouse. If others are getting through, please let us know, and we'll clean that up.

But we also hear your suggestion about filtering episodes out of the database -- currently, we only have that filter for "TV Series", but haven't broken it down further. Thanks for the suggestion, we'll take a look!

yeah...interesting topic ...

for example i am ok with american horror story (stand alone seasons) being listed several times

but i dont think that black mirror(stand alone) episodes should be listed separately

...

so maybe to introduce couple of checks like
[V] include stand alone episodes
[V] include stand alone seasons

I don't see why any show needs to be split at all, but if any kind of show is going to be split, I think only the Black Mirror types should be.

But then wouldn't that mean every single Twilight Zone type of show should be split? It will be inconsistent if not, or way too many individual episode entries if so.

2019 February update: I changed my mind on this. I think they should all just be one entry, even for Black Mirror type shows. The annoyance of having so many episode entries outweighs the benefit.

Mike, I've tried to submit some other episodes of anthology series like this but it won't even allow me to submit them for review.

I just get the message "Message: TV Episode - Criticker doesn't currently accept individual episodes into the system"

How can I submit episodes for things like this (The Wednesday Play for instance)?

And why is this allowed? https://www.criticker.com/tv/The-Reichenbach-Fall/

It's an episode of the show "Sherlock" which I haven't seen but I'm pretty sure is not an anthology series or "stand alone" type movies. It has the same characters and cast from episode to episode.

I went through and ignored every episode of Columbo. I don't get it either. Just make it be one entry.

mpowell, I'd be curious for an answer as to why "Sherlock" episodes were allowed when they don't seem to fit the criteria.

But more importantly, I'd like to propose some series that I feel very strongly do fit in this criteria. They are just like "American Playhouse" which you mentioned, and also like "Playhouse 90" which I see you also have episodes of already in the database.

As Wikipedia defines an "Anthology Series" - An anthology series is a radio, television or book series that presents a different story and a different set of characters in each episode. These usually have a different cast each week.

I'd ask you to consider please adding these series to the list of those you will allow individual episodes to be added from. If anyone else has any comments or suggestions, please share them. But many of these are fully contained films, many directed by filmmakers who would be considered by many to be "auteurs" (not that that last part is essential).

kritikos wrote:The best solution is to add episodes to their own TV episodes category and let users save a set of filters as their default view of the full database.

I think that should also be a solution, but I also think we should only add episodes if they are part of anthology series.

My primary reason for viewing "Sherlock" as worthy comes down to length. The episodes are 90 minutes, far exceeding a standard TV series, and fitting snugly in the perameters of an average movie. I can't be the only person who thinks so, considering "Sherlock's" award nominations include "best TV movie". Just because some of them continue storyline is beside the point, if that were a disqualifier, then we would also need to consider merging movies like "The Hobbit".
