suggestion: allow uploading PNG images as profile picture(currently only GIF and JPG allowed)

Why? The pictures are so small that the difference in quality would be imperceptible, but the file sizes would still be multiples more than a jpg

You are wrong. First of all, for non-photographic content, PNG files have both better image quality (lossless)
AND significantly smaller file size than JPG.
Secondly, you are confusing acceptable file types for uploading with storage on the server, as there might be a conversion involved.
Thirdly, currently GIFs are allowed. As PNGs are superior to GIFs in almost every aspect, you argument makes no sense.
Conclusion:
There is no good reason to disallow PNG uploading. Especially if GIF uploading is allowed.
