Books are a much bigger time commitment compared to films, so I would personally be less likely to try suggestions based on fellow Interneters. Then again, I don't read nearly as much as I used to, and am on my way to becoming a curmudgeon.
With regards to music that would be interesting; but Spotify, iTunes, YouTube all have recommendation engines. And what exactly would you be rating; artists? albums? individual songs? Honestly my favourite implementation when it came to music was at Uni, when other people's libraries would pop-up in the shared library section of iTunes and you could see how they ranked their music.

Any updates on this expansion? Using Criticker's rating system for literature would be pretty neat.

It's also a golden opportunity right now because Goodreads has become almost unusable the last year or two.
