Films centered on a race across a large geographical area: world, continent, country, or a significant stretch of such. Races against time or oneself also count, e.g. Around the World in 80 Days. I haven't seen any of the new Death Races, but my understanding is that they are each about a series of smaller and more contained races or derby-type things, so they would not count.
Particularly interested in non-American examples. Like a Bollywood remake of Cannonball Run.
They are rarely good or interesting, but go down real smooth on stoned Sunday afternoons

"Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (1965), and the follow on with automobiles, "Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies" (1969), both set in Europe.
And then there's always the "Cars" franchise, and "Planes".

I'd highly recommend "Redline (2009)". Wacky animated race across space. Story is absurd and probably a bit bad. But overall, as you said, a fun watch on a lazy sunday afternoon. Buttery smooth animation and wacky characters galore.
Apparently this movie got its director fired, because of its ridiculous high production costs as it went way over budget.
