Asteroids (1979)

Asteroids is an arcade space shooter released in November 1979 by Atari, Inc. and designed by Lyle Rains, Ed Logg, and Dominic Walsh. The player controls a spaceship in an asteroid field which is periodically traversed by flying saucers. The object of the game is to shoot and destroy asteroids and saucers while not colliding with either or being hit by the saucers' counter-fire. The game becomes harder as the number of asteroids increases. (wiki)

A shooter where the ship could freely move around the entire screen was damn innovative for its time! Asteroids is a lot better than Space Invaders and still retains a little fun to this day, which is a lot more than one can say for other games from that era.

Like most arcade games from the 70's and early 80's, this was frustratingly difficult. Very simple primitive graphics meant that each level was just a rehash of the last one, but with more enemies, which means that unless you have the patience of a saint or extreme focus, the game gets tedious and boring really fast. I played this maybe a handful of times on the Atari 2600, then threw it into the deep dark abyss that was my closet, never to see the light of day again!

I loved this back in the day. One of the first games I ever played on Atari. Again it's a game with no beginning to end unless you glitch out a high score. Which is like impossible to do because these games get super hard like after the 5th level. Like the noises and your ship blowing up.

Another Atari hit from the 70s. This one re-purposed the control scheme seen in earlier attempts like Computer Space into a game with more approachable and faster-paced action. I see the appeal, but I was never that good with these types of controls.

It is what it is - playable, but in terms of space shooter arcade-type games I'd certainly go for Space Invaders or Galaga over it.
