80 24% Wonder Boy (1987) - Rated 24 Mar 2024
"Sure, Wonder Boy's bestiary isn't quite as timeless as Super Mario Bros' (curiously enough, Sega don't seem to sell effigies of the "golliwog in a grass skirt" enemy), its levels are a tiny bit more repetitious, its music is a hell of a lot less varied, and throwing a few too many axes can cause some pretty gnarly slowdown in the last couple worlds, but it handles very well for a 1987 home console platformer and enforces a sort of manic forward progression that's quite addictive."

95 99% Wario Land 4 (2001) - Rated 04 Jan 2024
"Arguably the pinnacle of R&D1's offbeat, experimental design philosophy, overflowing with charm and humour and teaching its quirks to the player with an impressive seamlessness. I don't think the game was a massive commercial success (although it's by far the strongest title in the GBA's early library), but Nintendo's first-party output in the past decade or so has clearly cribbed a lot from what made it work."
84 42% Quake II (1997) - Rated 23 Dec 2023
"It would be churlish to blame Quake II for the dreary era of FPSes it heralded (or, more specifically, for the way its narrative and gameplay innovations paved the way for the most tedious instalment in the series), but I think anyone who loves the dance-like rhythms of Doom and Quake can see it marks an inflection away from their ethos and towards a slightly more plodding and cinematic vision of the genre. It's still very, very good, fast and fun, though!"
