Recent movies that trumped older classics

Nominations please for any films that are similar to older films but, IYHO, better. My first nomination would be that Nightcrawler trumps Lumet's Network. Network is a great film, but for me Nightcrawler just felt like it tackled similar issues in a more incisive and believable way. Ultimately I fel...

Re: What are some nail-biting, obscure murder mysteries?

Just watched "Tell No One" directed by Guillaume Canet.

Had read the book by Harlan Coben a couple of years ago -- enjoyed it lots but the film was even better! Great if you like to be kept guessing.

Re: Quality Modern-Day Scandinavian Movies

The Hunt and A Royal Affair, both starring Mads Mikkelsen, are two of the best films I've seen in the last couple of years. I think they're like a lot of European cinema and some contemporary Hollywood stuff in that, if you like things a bit more low key and realistic and less cliched and melodramat...

Re: Great performances in bad films and vice versa!

Another one I would throw in for bad performances in great films is Helen Mirren in The Last Station . Absolutely loved the film -- a great study of the idolisation of artists and hero-worship, but Helen Mirren did her best to ruin it by cranking the melodrama up to 11 with her Desparately Seeking O...

Re: Great performances in bad films and vice versa!

Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Revolutionary Road' Not only is this an excellent movie, but I would rank DiCaprio's performance as only the third best in the picture, behind Winslet's and Michael Shannon's. In fact, every significant actor in the film (those three plus Kate Hudson) had a strong performance....

I'll put Blacula on my list of bad films to watch!

From his IMDB bio sounds like a bit of an unappreciated talent.

Absolutely! I can only presume WR and KR were forced upon Coppola coz they were two of the biggest stars of the day. I did find Keanu more painful tho so he gets my vote.

Great performances in bad films and vice versa!

What are your nominations for performances that made otherwise average, mediocre or terrible films worth watching? And for performances that ruined what were perfectly good films, or films that could've been great? In the first category I nominate Fiona Shaw in Three Men and a Little Lady . She crac...
