Where are you getting this bizarre assumption from? From most interviews that I have read, many actors couldn't give a damn less about what the audience thinks, so long as they continue to get offered large roles for a lot of money.

This is a general statement that in no way supports your specific, all-encompassing claim. Some actors might be driven by approbation from sources other than a wider audience. (In the case of many actors, they take certain roles because it will entertain their kids) And some don't care about "approbation" as much as being well-known and making lots of money. You think Keanu Reeves is horribly depressed because most people think he is a lousy actor? Probably not. It might bother him, but it's not the dominant emotion behind his decision-making.
