I enjoyed Crows Zero and Sukiyaki Western Django, but I haven't seen much else of Miike's output since 2005.
Really though, I prefer to think of it as a transitional phase before his next major period rather than being past his prime. More masterpieces could be just around the corner

Most looking forward to Drive and Melancholia. Tree of Life should also be pretty good.

Not long until Tree of Life now! Anyone else following the various updates? I think Sleeping Beauty sounds interesting, but it got mixed reactions (which can be a good sign, though, I think) - on the other hand We need to talk abut Kevin seem to be getting very positive reviews. Looking forward to both, though it will probably take like a year for them to get distribution in Norway, if they even do (I'll have to go to Sweden to see Tree of Life lol). Guess that gives me plenty of time to finally watch Ratcatcher as well as give Morvern Callar another chance.
Damn, wish I was there, such an interesting list of films this year. The trailer for the Bonello film is awesome.

Von Trier banned from Cannes after he said he sympathized with Hitler, great guy.

This doesn't surprise me. I could tell just from watching Antichrist that this guy was fucked up. Before I saw that, I thought Melancholia actually looked good, but now I'm kind of alienated.

Re: Cannes 2011
Not a big fans of his films, but banning him seems over the top.
Agreed, the comments were insensitive and in bad taste. But it seems he made them in a fairly flippant and sarcastic way, as part of protracted ironic/idiotic musings about other things including porn and naked women.
Like I said, not a fan of his work, or his opinions (I even doubt his comments were entirely made in jest as he now asks us to believe - I've read elsewhere of his admiration for Nazi Germany's creativity and industry).
I personally don't sympathise with Hitler - it's pretty incomprehensible to me why anyone would. However, there's surely a difference between sympathising (trying to understand why someone acts as they do, even if you don't agree with it) and condoning/supporting. Whatever happened to free speech - and at a film festival of all places? I think Cannes have made themselves look a bit stupid. From what I've heard he apolgised, tried to clarify . . .and then they banned him anyway. OTT.

It's pretty clear from the article the guy's not a nazi, just a really terrible public speaker. Personally I think banning him is too harsh, then again it's better than to stand the scorn of the jewish community.

Re: Cannes 2011
here's the list of winners:
Palme d’Or: The Tree of Life
Grand Prix: (tie) The Kid With a Bike and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
Best Director: Nicolas Winding Refn, Drive
Best Actor: Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Best Actress: Kirsten Dunst, Melancholia
Best Screenplay: Joseph Cedar, Footnote
Prix du Jury: Polisse
I don't know how TTOL is being marketed where you reside, but I've never witnessed that many walkouts during a film, not to mention how the room wasn't crowded to begin with. Hope people aren't expecting the typical Brad Pitt vehicle. I've have yet to upload my review, but to bestow the highest honor on such a special film will hopefully allow folks to reassess their expectations.

You were there? How was the event, man?

Well, the prizes are all purely politically/economically motivated, no different than the Oscars, and have been for some time. "The Tree of Life" was going to win the award regardless of whether it was festering garbage or a brilliant masterpiece. I'm more interested in the piece of information that lots of people walked out of the screening.
