Horror movies like these - any recommendations?

Post by filmmaker90 »

Hi:

I like horror movies like

* The Innocents (1961/USA)
* The Exorcist (1973/USA)
* The Vanishing (1988/Dutch)
* The Others (2001/USA)
* The Orphanage (2007/Spain)
* The Conjuring (2013/USA)

These films have a good plot/story and they really care about building the suspense of the story than doing cheap scares and gore. Can anyone please recommend movies like these? Any hidden gems?

I am a Netflix member, so I can get most of the movies that exist.

Thanks.

Try some of that:
The Wicker Man (1973)
Jacob's Ladder (1990)
Cure (1997)
Parents (1989)
Hour of the Wolf (1968)
Audition (1999)

Vampyr (with Year of No Light's soundtrack) - For something a bit different.

I feel Onibaba is the correct answer for all of these threads.

Cool topic!

I put a filter for horror movies that start with "the" and this is what I got: The Thing, The Fly, The Guest, The Shining, The Cabines of Dr. Caligari

It's even funnier if you're a Netflix member and know what their pathetic horror selections consist of.

Anyways, going purely off Netflix,

Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Hellraiser
The Omen
Rosemary's Baby

seem like the OP would enjoy them. They have some (heavily edited) giallo from Bava and Argento, and a lot of other slashers you probably wouldn't like.

There are also dramas that feel like horror movies to me. I'd love to see a good list of these. Wajda's Kanal, RWB's A Night to Remember, oeuvres of Polanski and Kubrick generally. Films of dread w/out the supernatural elements.

When it comes to dramas that feel like horrors: 'Threads' and "Idi i Smotri'. As for other "high quality horrors" I would suggest: 'Twind of Evil" and "The Devil Rides Out" (both from Hammer Studios),
'Sileni' (2005) and 'The Cremator' (1969) - the Czechs really know their horror,
and some of my personal favorites: 'Possession' (1978), 'Don't Look Now' (1973), 'Santa sangre' (1989), 'Black Sunday' (1960) and of course 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me' (I know what you might think but give this another go, and please, just forget about the series and try to enjoy this as a separate piece).

I'd add
Diabolique
Eyes Without a Face
House of the Devil
The Innkeepers
Kill List
Cabin in the Woods

I also thought Resolution was a pretty decent horror film
