Recommendations

Post by cagedwisdom »

Ok, lately I've been craving some mega-cheesy 80s sci-fi/fantasy flicks. I would use Criticker to recommend me some, but the problem is that most of these films aren't very good (and I definitely don't have high PSIs) so they won't show up in customized recommendations. Essentially I'm looking for in reality bad, but cheesily entertaining and nostalgic stuff. Like Tron, War Games or The Wizard. (Incidentally, does anyone know if the Wizard has been released on Region 2 DVD..?)

Anyway, if anyone could recommend some films to me I'd be grateful. Remember, they don't have to be good, just cheesy. It helps if they have some kind of gimmick, though, so they at least almost stand out somehow.

And I guess if anyone feels like it they can use this topic to make similar requests.. Although I'm not sure if anyone would want to. I know not many people purposely seek out bad films. :P

when i think of a cheesy 80's sci-fi, the first thing that comes to mind is Enemy Mine (1985) with Dennis Quaid

Most should serve the purpose if you missed any. I couldn't resist sticking in some horror comedy flicks since they do the trick for me.

Quest for Fire (1981)
Repo Man (1984)
The Labyrinth (1986)
*batteries not included (1987)
The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
The Goonies (1985)
Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
The Princess Bride (1987)
The Lost Boys (1987)
Night of the Creeps (1986)
Flash Gordon (1980)
Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
The Secret of NIMH (1982)
The Last Unicorn (1982)
Weird Science (1985)
F/X (1986)
Society (1989)
The Dark Crystal (1982)
UHF (1989)
Innerspace (1987)
Fright Night (1985)

Well, I got lots of good responses here last time so I guess I'll try this again..

I currently crave films with unique, stylish visuals. Along the lines of The Fall, which I came across recently (and which was fantastic). That's all, really. Some fantasy-ish stuff with unique, breathtaking visuals.. Preferably something a little obscure (again, like The Fall).

Not expecting to strike gold like that again any time soon but any recommendations would be nice. I kinda got the taste for it. :)

This time you have chosen a more obscure subject. So consider yourself forwarned :). I wasn't even aware that Singh shot another movie, I'll grab it instantly. You have probably watched The Cell. Imo your main outline should be music video spin-off directors.

Some fantastic-ish movies worth the mention because of visuals are:
All the movies shot from Charlie Kaufman scripts
The Man Who Fell to Earth
Caotica Ana
Mind Game (it's an animation)
Dellicatessen & City of the Lost Children
Most of Gilliam movies
The Big Blue
Hellboy 2 (hell yeah :))
Fantastic Planet (again an animation, this time French one)
Dolls (meets the general concern)
Naked Lunch
Lady Vengeance (subjective choice, but it's unique in visual styling)

This is it for now, if you try some feedback is welcome :).
