Adding more game genres

Post by xenosapiens »

This has probably been suggested before, but I think the list of genres for games is in need of updating.

First off, Roguelike. This genre has become quite popular in recent years. We already have the Metroidvania subgenre, which was created by the popularity and abundance of action-adventure-platformers like Metroid and Castlevania, so if Metroidvania qualifies based on volume and popularity, so should Roguelike.

Going by that same line of reasoning, the Soulslike genre deserves an entry, imo. It's become one of the most popular action game subgenres and the influence of Soulslike games has bled into general game design practices.

The third genre I'll suggest is Adult/Mature. While it doesn't describe a specific type of gameplay, the genre has exploded on Steam and it would be useful to have as a content warning label.

Gacha games like Genshin Impact are quite popular, especially on mobile, and it's a design/monetization model that's becoming increasingly common.

We have the Shooter genre to encompass everything from FPS to Shoot 'em Ups. While some subgenres, like FPS, TPS, Hero Shooter, Arena, Light Gun, etc., probably don't need their own listings, I think Shoot 'em Up deserves to be added. It could be entered as written before, or as Shmup (common English abbreviation) or STG (common Japanese abbreviation).

Battle Royales should be added based on their popularity, imo, and they're not always Shooters.

And then we have Beat 'em Ups. Currently, games of this genre are assigned to the Action and/or Fighting genres. Beat 'em Ups have been around for decades, was one of the most popular genres during the peak arcade era, and I think it deserves to be differentiated from Action and Fighting games. But, like Shooters, there are so many games of this genre already in the database that it would be quite tedious to go through and update them all. If it were to be added, however, I would suggest Beat 'em Up or Brawler/Brawling.

In sum, consider adding the following genres:
- Roguelike
- Soulslike
- Adult or Mature
- Gacha
- Battle Royale
- Shoot 'em Up or Shmup or STG
- Beat 'em Up or Brawler

Perhaps my fellow users have more genres to suggest.
