Member Since: Jun 30, 2007

Bio: After a fairly Lynchian childhood in an American suburb, I moved to Japan at 13, saw foreign film, and it destroyed my fragile little mind. Now forever damaged, I live in LA, have degrees in Cinema and Religion, a Masters in Information Science, and watch too many films in between writing projects. Life goals: direct a film, and see a UFO.

95 92% El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron (2011) - Dec 26, 2021
"Frankly one of the most original, transcending, memorable beat-em-ups I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending my time with and I’d buy a copy for every future system if I could. Seems tailor-made to make me weak in the knees: you get calls from Lucifer to twist your arm into God’s bidding, traverse a world somewhere between cyberpunk and Atlantis, and can revive by mashing buttons as a proxy for praying to God. Plus it’s fun."
30 4% Marvel Puzzle Quest (2013) - Oct 14, 2021
"I’m used to complex games but this was like an indecipherable ancient text. Barely playable without online tutorials which is both impressive and troubling for a match-3 game."
78 67% Layers of Fear (2016) - Oct 14, 2021
"I probably have a frightening degree of entamaphobia so yeah give me things in doorways that shouldn’t be and I’m shitting my pants. The sound design is equally excellent - play with headphones after dark."
81 76% Eufloria (2009) - Feb 05, 2020
"Replayed recently on the iPhone and I have a soft spot in my heart for this one: a war strategy game in simple colors and supported by one of those calm-your-heart meditation music soundtracks. It may seem like a contradiction of form and function but I think it's welcome."
99 97% EarthBound (1994) - Jun 05, 2018
"Playing Earthbound as an adult is an emotional gut-punch - the equivalent of meeting your 7-year old self, and he gives you a warm, generous, uninvited hug, and tells you everything is OK. The gameplay and story of Earthbound greets the future with the wonder of a child: imagination, not cynicism; anticipation, not reluctance. It adds magic to life's real adventure. During the final battle - punctuated by the prayers of friends - I wasn't fighting Giygas, I was fighting back tears."
76 61% Star Fox (1993) - May 08, 2018
"A spectacular fireworks display of polygons set to one of the most impressive soundtracks of the 16-bit era."
40 7% Risk (1959) - Apr 25, 2018
"It doesn't take a degree in International Relations to realize there is some truth to the way Risk works if applied to the real world. Roll a dice. Rural Russian provinces and Australia will survive the carnage."
100 99% Chess (1600) - Apr 25, 2018
"I'll never forget the one and only time I beat my uncle - Ohio chess champion - in a game. He got beet red and said it was because I was "unpredictable". Chaos theory, bitches."
81 76% Galaga (1981) - Apr 25, 2018
"One of my favorites of the gaming Gods sitting on the old arcade Olympus. It retains that deceptive kind of gaming simplicity that breeds strategy out of necessity - perfect for both arcades, and for blowing through your allowance."
62 27% Excitebike (1984) - Apr 25, 2018
"Maybe putting "excite" in the title provoked unrealistic expectations."
