Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Criticker! Here are some common questions to help you get started and make the most of your experience.
Getting Started
Q: What is Criticker?
A recommendation site for films, TV, and games, that learns your tastes by comparing your ratings with those of like-minded users. It then generates personalized predictions for movies and shows you haven't seen, or games you haven't played.
Q: What makes Criticker different?
No other website produces recommendations as accurate as ours. With our 100-point rating scale and taste-matching algorithm, we're able to guess what score you might give a film with uncanny accuracy. Some have said that it seems like Criticker is reading their minds!
Q: How do I start getting recommendations?
Just rate some titles! The more you rate, the more accurate your recommendations will be. 50 is a good start, but recommendations really start improving after 100.
Q: Do I need an account to use Criticker?
Yes. Although you can browse without one, you'll need to sign up to rate titles and get personalized recommendations.
Recommendations & Algorithms
Q: How does Criticker decide which movies to recommend?
Based on the ratings you have in common, we calculate your Taste Compatibility Index (TCI) with other users and use that to generate predictions. If the people with tastes most similar to yours loved a film, chances are you'll enjoy it too.
Q: Can I see why a movie is recommended to me?
Absolutely! We show all of the calculations behind our recommendations, so you can see exactly which users contributed to the prediction and the math behind how we arrived at your Probable Score.
Q: What's up with the colors being applied to my scores?
Everybody rates things in a different way, especially when provided a 100-point scale. Criticker normalizes ratings by looking at their percentile in your overall list of ratings. So if a '65' is the lowest rating you've ever given, Criticker treats it as a '0'Percentile and assigns it the color red.
Q: Fine, but I consider '65' to be a middle-score, and want it to be yellow. Can I specify that?
Features
Q: What's the PSI score?
The PSI is our Probable Score Index. This is Criticker's prediction of what we think you'll rate a particular title, based on the ratings of your most compatible users.
Q: Can I add films and shows to a watchlist?
Yes. Criticker has built-in collections for both Watchlists and Ignored titles (which you can use to tell us to stop recommending a particular title).
Q: Can I tell Criticker the date I watched a movie?
Yes, you can optionally specify the date you watched a film, separate from the date you're rating it. Then, you can view your personal journal to see the films you watched in particular months or years.
Q: Can I make other types of lists?
Yes. We call them Collections, and you can create as many as you wish. Collections can be private, public, or even collaborative -- which allows the community to contribute. This is a great option if you'd like to discover more films about a particular topic!
Q: I see that I can give stars to reviews that I like. Can I downvote reviews I don't like?
No, we don't have a downvote option, because we want to keep the experience of using Criticker a positive one. If you find a review offensive or otherwise inappropriate, please use the 'Report' link to bring it to our attention. If you simply dislike it, you can mark the user who wrote it as 'ignored' so that you won't see their reviews in the future.
Community & Interaction
Q: Can I follow other users?
Yes, at Criticker we call friends 'Kumpels' (which is German for 'buddy'). You can add as many kumpels as you like, and then keep up-to-date on what they've been watching.
Q: Is there a community policy, or limits on the types of reviews I can write?
Yes, we have a community policy which all users of Criticker must adhere to, that prohibits offensive or hateful language on the site. This includes (but is not limited to) racism, homophobia, misogyny, and personal attacks toward another user.
Q: I found an offensive review. Will you remove it?
We provide a simple utility to report a review which you've found troubling or offensive, as well as a way to ignore individual users. After a review is reported, our moderation team will make a decision. If they decide to delete the review, the offending user will be notified and receive a warning. Multiple offenses may result in a ban.
Q: What about reviews that aren't offensive, but contain spoilers?
Report these, too! We won't delete them, but may choose to hide them behind a spoiler tag.
Technical / Support
Q: Is there a mobile app?
Not yet, but the website is mobile-friendly and works well on phones and tablets. We plan on introducing a proper app in the future.
Q: Can I import ratings from another site?
We currently support imports from IMDB and Letterboxd. You can also upload ratings from any CSV file which follows our formatting.
Q: I found a mistake in the list of actors. How do I fix it?
You can suggest corrections directly on the title's page. Our moderators review and apply updates regularly.
Q: I found a bug on the site. How can I report it?
Please head over to our list of open bugs, and make sure someone else hasn't already reported it. If not, you'll be able to use the Bug Reporting form to let us know about it. We try to fix bugs as quickly as we can, but please be aware that it can take some time.
