Roger Ebert is not a respectable critic. He's a shill who thinks almost every movie he sees is phenomenal.

It's certainly a valid way to describe his career from 2000 onwards, and perhaps even earlier than that. After all, Ebert gave Godfather Part 2 3 stars, compared to 3.5 stars for Godfather Part 3, and a perfect 4 stars for the immortal Spiderman 2. Not that I believe Godfather Part 2 is the end all be all of film, but the relative scores support the notion that Ebert has gone from being a serious critic to a shill over the decades.

Bottom line is this: think for your fucking self, instead of letting critics decide for you!

I can no longer take Ebert seriously since 1 or 2 years.. He's had his mistakes before, but now there are just too many. I think he has finally become senile.

Zero Dark Thirty and TDKR just 3 stars, when stuff like The Amazing Spider-Man gets 3,5 stars
Killing Them Softly 2 stars
Intouchables and The Master the same score as Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2
Cloud Atlas, Prometheus 4 stars
He called Skyfall the best Bond movie in years, totally ignoring Casino Royale

Bottom line is this: think for your fucking self, instead of letting critics decide for you!

Quoted for truth.. Consensus can be useful sometimes, but never rely on just a few critics, and keep in mind that some directors always receive high ratings in most places (especially imdb) even if the movie isn't great.

Absolutely. Some critics are often useful for putting films into an appropriate context or for making you aware of films you might otherwise have completely missed, but I can't imagine why people would just reflexively agree with any kind of consensus, or trick themselves into liking something because they're told it is great.

I remember back when Avatar came out he gave it 4 stars, then a few months later he actively campaigned against it getting the Best Picture because it wasn't worthy. What more can be said?

I thought this excerpt from Jessica Chastain's acceptance of her Golden Globe for best actress was very interesting:

It looked, as she was making her way to the stage, like she was saying "Oh God" over and over again.

"...to the great, great Amy Pascal (Sony Pictures Chairman) for protecting our film; Mark Boal for writing a strong, capable independent woman that stands on her own; and to Katheryn Bigelow, my director. I can't help but compare my character of Maya to you--two powerful, fearless women who allow their expert work to stand before them. You've said that film making for you is not about gender roles; but when you make a film that allows your character to disobey the conventions of Hollywood, you've done more for women in cinema than you take credit for."

George Clooney was the presenter, standing by while she made her comments. She turned to him as she was leaving and spoke, but he only smiled weakly.

My favorite part of Zero Dark Thirty was the insanely distracting casting decisions.

Stannis Baratheon! Bert Macklin, FBI(Tony Robbins line was the best of the film)! Michael from Lost!

Jason Clarke and the monkeys were great too.
