Summary of 2013 viewing

Post by djross »

New films watched during 2013: 300. Previous years: 240 in 2012; 237 in 2011; 330 in 2010. The lower numbers in 2011 and 2012 were mainly due to the consequences of the illness and death of my mother.

Masterpieces (scores between 91 and 100) watched in 2013: 2 films. They are: The Sorrow and the Pity (1969, Marcel Ophüls) and Late Spring (1949, Yasujiro Ozu). Both scored 91. Previous years: 2 in 2012; 2 in 2011; 2 in 2010. Seems I watch two new masterpieces per year.

Tier 10 films watched in 2013: 9 films. They are: Late Spring, The Sorrow and the Pity, Accattone, Die Nacht, Juliet of the Spirits, The Memory of Justice, Photographic Memory, Robinson in Ruins, and Un voyageur. The case could be made that the theme of memory is prominent in quite a few of these movies. Previous years: 5 in 2012; 8 in 2011; 15 in 2010.

Tier 9: 26 films. Previous years: 15 in 2012; 12 in 2011; 12 in 2010. The increase is due to the fact that during this year my Tier 9 has been redefined by Criticker to include scores of 75, rather than just scores of 80.

Lowest-scoring film watched in 2013: The Führer Gives the Jews a City (1944). My score was 0: the first time I have given a film nothing.

2013 films: 33 films. Highest-scoring: Un voyageur (Marcel Ophüls; score of 85).

Films seen at the theatre in 2013: 5 films. They are: Star Trek Into Darkness, Upstream Color (walked out due to low volume), Un voyageur, Frances Ha, and Gravity.

Films re-watched in 2013: 9 films. They are: Contempt, Dead Ringers, Ghostbusters, The Ister, Seconds, Sobibor, Star Trek, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

One masterpiece (which was greatly underrated/misunderstood by most of the few who saw it), The Counselor.

Several disappointments, especially The Wolf of Wall Street, The Lone Ranger, animation in general, and biggest of all, To The Wonder.

Surprises: Spring Breakers, Trance, The Bling Ring, The Angel's Share.

The worst movie (this year/ever), Bad Grandpa.

This year's promising movie(s) yet to be viewed (due to very limited release  ): Her

Delayed/disappeared/? : The Philosophers, The Zero Theorem, The Immigrant.

Watched 161 movies in 2013. 8 less than 2012 and not as bad as I expected as a lot of other things occured during the year.

Went to the cinema 6 times this year(5 in 2012, 10 in 2011), But only 1 movie was from 2013 and that was Kick-Ass 2 (T5).

My T10s watched/re-watched:

A Bucket of Blood (1959)
Taxi Driver (1976)
A Dirty Shame (2004)
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Léon (1994)
Black Sunday (1960)
Solaris (2002)

22 T1s with the worst of it being:

Troll 2 (1990) - I would have enjoyed it more if not for the over-the-top camp.
The Rookie (1990)
Shanghai Surprise (1986)
Orca (1977)

Other notable films:

Cause for Alarm! (1951) T9 - Loretta Young has a really bad day.

The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972) T7 - A childhood fave that I finally got to see again.

Billy Jack (1971) T2 - They showed practically all of Tom Laughlins' movies on Video On-Demand last year and I watch them all (all T2s). And he died the day after Peter O'Toole died.

Happy New Year and Happy Viewing.

best count for films seen in 2013 is 477. because that's about two-thirds of my total viewing, you can pretty much look at my normal rankings to see the statistics. i believe 2001 and the new world are my only masterpieces not viewed first in 2013.

Films watched in 2013: 210, up from 143 in 2012.

Tier 10 films watched in 2013: 12. Life of Pi, Django Unchained, Holy Motors, The Human Condition I, The Human Condition II, The Human Condition III, Fight Club, Devils on the Doorstep, Dog Day Afternoon, Rear Window, Falkenberg Farewell, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
And 13 T9 films.

Highest-scoring film watched in 2013: Holy Motors, 96.

Lowest-scoring film(s) watched in 2013: The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai and Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus, both at 15.
Didn't watch very many really bad films in 2013 - only 11 T1 films ranked.

2013 films: 26 films.
Highest-scoring: The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (by Studio Ghibli/Isao Takahata; score 95)
Lowest-scoring: Oz the Great and Powerful (score 30)
Haven't had a chance to see many of the big American 2013 movies such as 12 Years A Slave, Wolf of Wall Street etc, because they haven't reached Japan yet.

Films seen at the theatre in 2013: 9. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Argo, The Town, The Wind Rises, Why Don't You Play In Hell?, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Gravity.
The first 4 are 2012 films that were late in reaching Japan. With Life of Pi and Gravity, this was the year that sort of warmed me up to 3D. The Hobbit in 48 fps 3D in an IMAX theater was cool too, though the film was mediocre at best.

Oh, I guess I can join in.

New film rankings in 2013: 219
previous years: 2012: 214 / 2011: 221
Pretty consistent. Most of these are new (for me) films although I'd guess roughly 10% are films I'd seen before but never ranked.

Masterpieces (sure, 91 or higher, why not?) watched in 2013: only 1, Water (Deepa Mehta, 2005).
previous years also one each.

Tier 10: 5 films. They are: Water, Shoah, Alice (Neco z Alenky), Dogville, Eraserhead. Previous years: 9 in 2012, 15 in 2011.
Tier 9: 21 films. Previous years: 30 in 2012:, 31 in 2011.

Looks like I'm getting tougher with my rankings, although some of that might be due to spending less time trying to watch canonical "Great Films" and more time trying to work through my backlog of unwatched miscellanea.

Lowest-ranked film first seen in 2013: Girls in the Hood (lao ni mei). Also rewatched(!) "End of Days" and "Dogma" which scored lower.

Wow, you guys watched a lot of films in 2013.

Total movies- 101, of which 11 were shorts.

Best movies (all-time great or better)-

1. Ran (1985) (88)

2-5.The Bicycle Thieves (1948) (82)

2-5. The Long Goodbye (1973) (82)

2-5. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) (82)

2-5. Triad Election (2006) (82)

6-7. I Clowns (1971) (81)

6-7. The Last Circus (2010) (81)

8-10. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) (80)

8-10. Audition (1999) (80)

8-10. Zulu (1964) (80)

Number of T10 movies- 14 (Higher than 15%. Considering that it's almost impossible for shorts to attain this tier...that's quite good!)

Number of T1 movies- 9 (A few more were at 22, just one point above the cut-off, but while some T1s were curiosity watches, one was a random watch on vacation, and another was a movie I simply remembered from back in the day, this is still a bit high)
