ABZU is a fantastic water-based Journey that is a little too gamey with a camera that is sometimes wonky. I love Journey. It’s my favorite game of the Xbox 360/PS3 era. ABZU is sort of a cheaper version (except it’s more expensive, ha ha). The music isn’t quite as good, there’s no unique multiplayer stuff, the emotional punch of the story is muted in comparison to that heavenly ascension. But it’s still beautiful. There are several moments that are so gorgeous and spiritually affecting

Not terrible, but still a shameless ripoff of Journey and Flower.

Blurs the lines between game and interactive art exhibit. While a negative opinion of the limited+derivative gameplay is very understandable, for a tree hugger (or in this case fish hugger) like me the reveal of each new environment and each new animal was a joyous experience. Highlights include discovering the humpback whales by diving straight down into a pitch black abyss, and the delightful surprise of finding some, shall we say, "unexpected" species once entering the abandoned city.

Impossible to not think Journey when you think this, especially considering it shares some talent. Wintory's score is good but not his best. Just call it like it is: this is an experience, you swim around and there's not a lot in the way of conventional challenge, you just look at pretty fishies and areas and if that's your thing, it's good. If it's not, stay away. You don't walk but it's still like a walking simulator and the genre has done better, but there's stuff to enjoy here.

Barely anything to it in terms of gameplay, but it has some spectacle, and it was nice to immerse myself for a bit in the starting sections.
