Castlevania is the first 3D game in the Castlevania series. The player selects one of the game's protagonists: Carrie Fernandez, a young orphan with magic powers, or Reinhardt Schneider, the whip-wielding heir to the Belmont clan. Carrie and Reinhardt set out on a quest to stop Count Dracula's impending return to power. Many series such as Mario and Zelda translated from 2D to 3D beautifully and seamlessly. Castlevania... not so much, with these loose, floaty controls and poor hit detection and with barely any of the series' usual great music. I will admit that the hedge maze labyrinth while being chased by a de facto Leatherface with a chainsaw absolutely horrified me back in 1999 though; still one of my favorite scary video game sequences. Too bad little else in the game is very good.
