68% Kirby and the Forgotten Land (2022) - Rated 31 Jul 2024
"Ultimately slight experience that only gets even marginally tough on the last boss or two (I think I died maybe ten times total throughout the whole game), but colorful and keeps the attention. Some annoying things (did we need THIS many Treasure Roads? And why keep the Waddle Dee missions secret until each level has been completed?), but it's cute and the mouthful mode mixes up the Kirby formula just enough. Pretty robust postgame with the Isolated Isles, Ultimate Arena etc."
22% Tales of Zestiria (2015) - Rated 01 Jul 2024
"I gave it an honest shot but was driven to the point of insanity by the nonstop “set the controller down and watch” cutscenes. Talk talk talk, anime scene anime scene anime scene, skit skit skit, like - MOTHERFUCKER!! I’M TRYNA PLAY A VIDEO GAME HERE!!! MAKE A TV ANIME IF YOU WANNA MAKE A TV ANIME!! (Beyond that I could’ve maybe gotten into the battles and exploring the world etc but god damn man. Sometimes I’m tempted to just go back to playing nothing but NES platformers forever.)"
92% Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024) - Rated 24 Apr 2024
"Hovering between a 7 or 8 because I do think the sidequests and minigames were overkill (once they introduced Gears & Gambits I was like FUCK OFF) - but as an epic adventure that blends beloved lore & characters, semi-open world exploration, reasonably fun/complex battle systems, good dungeons, high customization, great music and fun card & racing side games, it's hard not to recommend. The fact I beat all 120+ hours of it when I put most games these days down partway through speaks volumes!"
51% Lords of Exile (2024) - Rated 29 Feb 2024
"Very quick and basically fun 8-bit styled platformer styled seemingly about 75% on Castlevania and 25% on Ninja Garden. Worth an evening's playthrough if you're into that kind of thing, though I doubt it'll stay with me. Infinite lives and a good six or seven checkpoints per level make it beatable for pretty much anyone, unlike the games it's inspired by - up to you if that's a good or bad thing."
6% Clu Clu Land (1984) - Rated 11 Feb 2024
"Didn’t get it"
2% Mappy-Land (1986) - Rated 11 Feb 2024
"Unfortunate title"
68% King's Quest II: Romancing the Stones (2002) - Rated 30 Jan 2024
"Really cool fan remake where they even brought in original series voice actors; wild to realize this is now over 20 years old. Don't give it my highest score though because let's be honest it's still pretty obtuse unless you use a guide."
51% Sea of Stars (2023) - Rated 18 Jan 2024
"So look - pixel art is among the best I've seen in any game EVER; aesthetic presentation fully on point. Gameplay mostly fun, if a bit monotonous with each protag only having 3 spells you'll use over and over the whole game. But locking the true final boss and true ending behind having to collect 100 PERCENT of all these collectibles/doo-dads strewn across the world is ASSHOLE GAME DESIGN. Hated this 25 YEARS AGO in Jet Force Gemini; I can't fucking BELIEVE a game in 2023 would pull this shit."
11% Pinball (1984) - Rated 07 Jan 2024
"Yep it’s pinball."
51% Timespinner (2018) - Rated 26 Nov 2023
"A very basic and short Metroidvania. Everything looks and sounds nice, reminiscent of the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Play control smooth. But the world isn’t really interconnected in interesting ways, most areas just extending out into a long and flat map. Too much lore for a game its length tbh."
