In five years while the original team at Epic was turning out multiplayer-focused offshoots, the team at Legend tasked with a single-player sequel to Unreal kept taking up and casting aside any number of ambitious ideas, creating a whole mountain of plot they never used. In the end, what actually came out of it was a short, slow, and floaty shooter saddled with a few awkward "point defense" missions and little relation to the original. The plot adds some decent (albeit predictable) character.
