As my ratings currently stand ...

The Dark Knight
Hot Fuzz
Mad Max: Fury Road
Zodiac

I then have four tied on the same rating for 5th spot

Grand Budapest Hotel
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
The Lego Movie
Ratatouille

Which I would probably rank in that order if pushed.

Based on my Criticker scores:
1. Polisse (2011)
2. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
3. Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013)
4. The Secret of Kells (2009)
5. Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)

My list surprises me, they aren't the films I've thought about most, or revisited, but rather the ones that elicited the most gushing positive reactions from me upon viewing. Still, a fine set to be stuck on a desert island with.

1. melancholia
2. the turin horse
3. synecdoche new york
4. house of tolerance
5. imburnal

as for documentaries, or "documentaries":

1. berlin, berlin (2009)
2. encounters at the end of the world
2. it felt like a kiss
2. material (2009)
2. nostalgia for the light
2. the real life (2013)

yeah, that's a lot of ties. deal with it.

anyway, the most important things for me are the formal audiovisual aspects, affective power, and genuine creative intent. and by the latter i mean that if i feel that the director is "faking" it, for whatever inexplicable reason, then i will probably hate their movies.

How might one go about seeing the films of Arnaud Gerber? Or Imburnal?

I haven't seen all of the recent highly acclaimed films (especially those form Europe and Asia), so maybe a bit biased towards the first half of the decade:

There Will Be Blood (2007)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
Let the Right One In (2008)
The Tree of Life (2011)
