Each player starts off with nine tiles that they keep secret. The first person makes a word. The second player must make a word that begins with or ends with either the first or last letter of the word. If you can't make anything at all then you have to say "pick and pass" and take three more tiles from the remaining tiles, called the "bunch", and that's the end of your turn.
