Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition

2008
Role-Playing
The 4th edition of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game overhauled the game's systems. Changes in spells and other per-encounter resourcing give all classes a similar number of at-will, per-encounter and per-day powers. Powers have a range of effects including inflicting status effects, creating zones, and forced movement, making combat very tactical for all classes but essentially requiring use of miniatures, reinforced by the use of squares to express distances. This edition gets a lot of hate, but it may be my favorite. Forgive me for using this word, but it focuses more on the synergy of the group. Every attack can help a teammate and it just feels better as opposed to just being your own character with these other guys who are around.

This is the edition in which they decided that a tabletop roleplaying game should play like a hack-'n'-slash videogame. This is how they lost my interest.

Easy to read equals easy to learn. This one is much more complex than 5e, yet it can be learned without someone having to teach you. Plus, the classes were balanced nicely (the asymmetry was in roles, not in usefulness). Yes, it borrowed a lot from video games. Seeing as how video games borrowed from D&D since forever, how is this a bad thing? You can do all the same stuff here that you can in other D&Ds, but this time they tell you the actual difference between a fighter and a wizard.

Not nearly as bad as the haters make it out to be, I genuinely think this is a better introduction for new players than the overly complex Pathfinder but there's really no reason to play it now that we have 5th edition.

This edition was a huge mistake. They took all the mechanics and classes and whitewashed them. 5th edition returned to form, somewhat.
