Gateway may have been intended as an experiment: is it possible to reduce a Gold Box game's difficulty to absolute zero? Apart from a single optional battle (which is thankfully quite fun), this feels far easier than SSI's Gold Box games. Most other design elements have also at least mildly declined. It's not a bad game, but compared to the original series it feels surprisingly unambitious.
