90 T10 The Surge (2017) - 03 Aug 2023
"An excellent soulslike; I actually enjoyed it more than most of the Dark Souls games. The labyrinthine and highly interconnected maps are the game's standout feature, but I also liked the character building, the combat, and most of the bosses. Aiming at body parts is a simple gimmick that does a good job at spicing up the gameplay loop. The game is quite short, but I prefer short games; my main complaints are that certain enemies feel a bit overtuned, and the game is actually too dark in places."
90 T10 Final Fantasy Tactics (1997) - 30 Jul 2023
"Probably the best game of its genre, with only a few annoyances that slightly diminish it; there's way too many random encounters, which are all level scaled and unavoidable, and the progression system encourages min-maxing to such an extent that it gets slightly ridiculous."
90 T10 Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (2007) - 30 Jul 2023
"Probably the best game of its genre, with only a few annoyances that slightly diminish it; there's way too many random encounters, which are all level scaled and unavoidable, and the progression system encourages min-maxing to such an extent that it gets slightly ridiculous."
91 T10 Operencia: The Stolen Sun (2019) - 17 Jul 2023
"A very fun dungeon crawler with a good mixture of combat, exploration, and puzzling. Biggest annoyances on Hard mode (with an additional no-resting challenge) were a silly difficulty spike on the final boss and the constant need to respec through a pretty clunky UI to accomodate different enemy resistances and immunites. I also got the impression that a couple of abilities were either not working as intended or described incorrectly."
75 T6 Breathedge (2018) - 01 Jul 2023
"Starts off as a slightly worse Subnauticalike with some really dumb design decisions (like the limitations on where you can build storage containers, and making them incredibly small), then devolves into a highly linear "narrative experience" style of game, which is one of my least favourite genres."
83 T8 Environmental Station Alpha (2015) - 30 Jun 2023
"Overall a fun Metroidvania with very good boss fights, but some of the area routing really sucks, and the fast travel points are not exactly generously placed. Considering you can only heal in specific locations, that made backtracking and secret hunting needlessly frustrating for me."
86 T9 Grime (2021) - 30 Jun 2023
"A fun Metroidvania with a few annoying design choices (no automap until you find the "beacon" for each area, a limited amount of map pins that isn't nearly enough to mark all the secrets, and DLC areas that are way overtuned, but can easily be confused for mandatory content), but ultimately a very fun experience with great boss fights. Note: I played the heavily patched game with a bunch of QoL improvements, so I probably had a significantly better experience than people who played at launch."
75 T6 Mortal Shell (2020) - 17 Jun 2023
"A perfectly decent little game, but the lack of proper character progression and some annoying design choices (dungeon runbacks...) dragged it down for me."
81 T8 8Doors: Arum's Afterlife Adventure (2021) - 23 Apr 2023
"A fun little Metroidvania with entertaining boss fights. My main problem was the difficulty and length of some of the platforming, which made the exploration and backtracking more annoying than they needed to be."
95 T10 Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg (1997) - 30 Mar 2023
"A very charming little gathering-and-crafting game that's surprisingly engrossing to play. Has a nice feeling of progression where you start with extremely limited resources and end up completeIy breaking the economy. The storytelling is also very personal and small-scale, which I greatly appreciated. I can't find any significant faults with this game, and it's clearly a pioneer of its genre. (played the PS2 remaster)"
