Unless you're a retro gaming extremist, Ys I & II usually come joined at the hip, which is sensible since they were originally designed as a single game. Featuring an addictive 'bump system', where Adol combats enemies by ramming them off-centre. Adol has no run and is restricted to four-way movement, making combat and dungeon navigation occasionally vexing; elements rectified in Falcom's stunning 2001 Windows remake, Ys I & II Complete. Having to unlearn some very basic videogame skills (pressing a button to attack) was difficult, but the bump combat gradually grows on you. Given how much frontbrain thought you have to put into positioning, I'd argue bumping makes you better at other games as well. Y's is a great yesteryear Action RPG that feels more like a true metroidvania than a Zelda clone, and it's best played in the TG-16 CD format because of the (usually) stellar voice acting and music (the PC remake is also swell).
