Osu! is a freeware rhythm game. Its game play is based on commercial titles including Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, Elite Beat Agents, Taiko no Tatsujin, Beatmania IIDX, O2Jam, and DJMax. As the song plays, the player must click on different hit-elements (hit circles, sliders, and spinners) in time with the rhythm of the song in order to earn points. This is done using a mouse, although more experienced players tend to use other input devices such as a graphics tablet or touchscreen. (wikipedia.org)

Hated by some revered by others: This is, without a doubt, a small glimpse into the future of rhythm games (and, quite possibly, gaming as a whole.)

I prefer the polished and story-driven Ouendan games as well as the tactile feel of the stylus and DS touch screen to osu!'s control setup. However, due to the sheer variety of songs and modes, I must recommend osu!. Since it looks like Nintendo has forgotten about the Ouendan/EBA series, this is the only way to get your fix if you are a fan -- and it's free!
