Rally-X (???X Rar?-Ekkusu) is a driving game set in an overhead, scrolling maze, released in arcades by Namco. It was the first game with background music. The object of the game is to collect all of the flags scattered around the maze while avoiding collision with enemy cars. A radar shows the locations of the flags, but not rocks or maze walls. Namco's next big maze chase game a few months after Pac-Man. A fun and straightforward take on the genre, with a bit of influence from 70s games like Head-On and such. The big, sprawling levels and randomized flag locations make things less predictable than Pac-Man, but the radar screen keeps things manageable. Didn't gain its lovable and much-remixed theme song until the next year's sequel, New Rally-X, though there is a simpler background tune for the first game.
