Shantae is a platform video game. The game follows the adventures of the eponymous half-genie Shantae, who must travel across Sequin Land, the setting of the series, to foil the domination plans of the evil lady pirate Risky Boots. During her quest, she learns various dances and acquires items which make her progressively stronger as well as unlocking new abilities and locations, leading her to ultimately face off against Risky in her hideout. This is the definition of a hidden gem. This game would have been way more popular if it was released on GBA instead of GBC, which was already out of commission for a year. The mechanic in the game is that you can transform into different animals that help you navigate the map and get to new areas. There is a lot of going back and forth on the map and the open world is actually more challenging than the dungeons which can be a turn off for unskilled players. Overall this game is a lot of fun.
