Have a Nice Death (2023) - Rated 10 Sep 2026

A roguelike action game set in the afterlife would surely never work. All kidding aside, even without having Hades as a predecessor HAND doesn't land. Runs feel short, action variety is lacking, movement is OK at best, and the dialogue needs work. I'm not quite sure this one was fully finished.

TCG Card Shop Simulator (2024) - Rated 10 Sep 2026

Does as advertised, well enough to spawn a bunch of clones anyway, but inherently niche. Card enjoyers will get wrapped up in it for a while. Before long, there's a progression wall that will likely kill your interest. Good enough for a few hours.

Final Fantasy VII Remake EPISODE INTERmission (2022) - Rated 31 Aug 2026

Technically DLC but doesn't share anything save-wise with the base. Included in the PS5 version of Remake anyway. Worth a playthrough, which says a lot coming from one who doesn't like aRPGs and hates Yufi.

Super Mario Maker 2 (2019) - Rated 25 Aug 2026

If you love Mario, here is theoretically infinite Mario. I'm not personally a fan of "here, fans, do all the work for us" games, or things that rely on online functions to work. Not a bad idea, just not my thing. I am concerned at the amount of posts I see about it being a downgrade from 1. That isn't like Nintendo.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2016) - Rated 24 Aug 2026

It's impressive that a series can be so formulaic yet consistently deliver quality of this caliber. Experience and a new-gen console give U4 a good polish, and the story is the best to date. The bonus unlockables are a nice touch, and stealth is improved. Goes a bit over the line on the "suspend your disbelief" meter.

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption (2018) - Rated 13 Aug 2026

A rare case of not only beta testing, but early backing a project. This is the spiritual successor to a series near and dear to my childhood. However, if I didn't know going in, I'd never know. They forgot the spirit. It doesn't feel at all like it's even made by the same people. A disappointment for fans and a nothingburger to anyone else.

Cosmic Star Heroine (2017) - Rated 12 Aug 2026

Among a flurry of indie attempts to recapture the magic of classic jRPGs. The game has some good ideas and is made to a functional level, but lacks punch. Party changes happen too often to get a feel for any of the characters or an overall strategy. Just try stuff, it'll work. I gave the story plenty of time to get going somewhere; it didn't.

NHL 18 (2017) - Rated 11 Aug 2026

A few years after sprucing up the series, EA's hockey line has settled into a nice groove. NHL 18 does what you want just fine. I'm not aware of anything new that's particular to this year. The 3v3 mode is a nice arcade option.
