"It was only a matter of time before Wenders' lifelong flirtation with Ozu would culminate in a Japanese movie, but intentionally or not, aside from the very low-key veneer, it's not very Ozu-like. Much of the movie seems like a sparse visual track for Wenders to fill with his favorite jangly American oldies for some reason. Eventually a bit of psychological family drama pops in to add a little gloom to the otherwise happy-go-lucky protagonist, but there's never any depth."
