For more context of where I’m coming from, you need to know that I did not complete this. I put a few hours in. I rated it for the same reason I’d rate anything on Criticker: I just want to keep track of what I thought. I also don’t like survival horror that much. It’s mostly resource management that turns me off. I like horror games like F.E.A.R where it’s scary as hell but you’re still a super soldier. Or turn-based horror RPGs. Or walking simulator horror games where I can just bathe in the spooky atmosphere. Also, games like this end up kind of stressing me out a bit so I just stop playing and move onto something else, even if I really like them for a while. I know that’s a me problem. I can handle horror movies and books but the interactivity of horror sometimes gets to me. I’m a wimp, basically.

I did enjoy this. As I say in my mini-review, the atmosphere, what I know of the story, and the visuals are all great. That’s why it gets a 70. But I still just hate managing my bullets. I hate how you get one torch. I hate how bullet-spongey the enemies can be, especially as they merge, mixed with limited resources.

A mod will probably make this game better for me. I reckon if I played it with a mod that increased ammo and inventory space (or resources so I could more easily upgrade stuff like inventory), I’d like this a lot more. I’m already such a wimp that making me feel more powerful isn’t going to change the fact that I’m going to carefully work my way through areas in fear of something jumping out at me (I also hate dark hallways). Even with franchises I adore like Metro, I’m willing to play it on a difficulty where resources are more abundant (and Metro is by no means on the same level of spookiness as many horror games) because it’s never feeling powerless that makes me appreciate a horror game, it’s the atmosphere.
Mini Review: I enjoy the atmosphere, story and visuals. It’s a great world and I was intrigued. But like most survival horror games, I just get annoyed by the lack of resources and quit. Combat’s okay, and the merging is an interesting idea (though the burning bodies is implemented poorly). It’s a good game, it’s just not my type of game.
