3-film minimum. Looks like Aronofsky didn't make it.
10. George Lucas 31.8
- Making this list is a truly impressive accomplishment considering how high I've ranked the 1st Star Wars Trilogy and 1st Raiders movie. Without the nostalgia goggles, he'd be probably be lower.
9. Todd Phillips 29.7
8. Ben Sharpsteen 29.7
- Had to look him up. Classic (mostly) Disney films.
7. Ishirô Honda 29.6
- Somewhat sad to see him here, but can't say it's wrong.
6. Zack Snyder 28
- Probably my most truly disliked director on this list, although I don't question his technical skill.
5. William Friedkin 27.3
4. Kinji Fukasaku 23.3
3. Shun'ya Itô 22.7
- Had to look him up. Female Prisoner Scorpion series.
2. Lilly/Lana Wachowski 16.7
1. Roland Emmerich 13

Re: The ten lowest-scoring directors
I do tend to avoid the "Look Who's Talking Nows" altogether, and I have noticed that it messes up my rankings because movies I think are perfectly alright are getting pushed to under my 50% percentile. Still, Bong Joon-ho is terrible and Parasite specifically was like a torture session for me. I would probably rate "Look Who's Talking Now" higher, if I were to watch it.martryn wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 2:41 amMoribunny, I've noticed this in other forum posts, but we have radically different tastes. I am definitely curious about the types of films you do rank high. And I've taken note. I am honestly eager to go down that "rabbit hole", pun intended, as I generally enjoy a broad variety, but like... you hated Parasite? You hated Parasite THAT much? I get thinking it's overrated, or even boring, I guess, but there's got to be some strong ideological reasons for hating Bong Joon-ho. I think I've only seen Parasite and The Host, but even the biggest hater can't honestly rank them THAT low.
Or maybe the explanation is that you just don't consume and rank, even accidentally, the Kangaroo Jacks and Look Who's Talking Nows of the film world.

Re: The ten lowest-scoring directors
Huh. Okay, I guess I'm not surprised by many of these (3-film min., avg. %-ile):
10. Renny Harlin (3): 30 - His skeleton is named Andrew Dice Clay
9. Mel Brooks (7): 22.4 - I guess that his sense of humour doesn't really mesh with mine.
8. Garry Marshall (3): 21.7 - Pretty Woman is about as bad as things get, as far as I'm concerned.
7. Roger Donaldson (4): 21.5 - Just a collection of middlebrow sludge
6. Joel Schumacher (5): 21.4 - It's not great, but then he made Batman Forever.
5. Jonathan Kaplan (3): 21.3 - Even his prestige work is just tedious.
4. John Carpenter (3): 17 - Somehow I saw Memoirs of an Invisible Man
3. John Woo (3): 14.7 - Probably wouldn't have seen enough of his stuff if he hadn't gone Hollywood at a time when I had easy access to movies
2. Chris Columbus (3): 14.0 - Just could never take his particular style of schlock
1. Nancy Meyers (3): 11.7 - I try to be more open-minded about her fare, but it all just disappoints. Didn't expect her to be the worst.

Re: The ten lowest-scoring directors
You crack me up, man. I'm not one to judge another person by their tastes, but you're an enigma to me. It takes all types. I've been looking specifically into some of the directors and films you've mentioned on these lists, giving a few new things a try. I doubt there will ever be an overlap between any of our lists, but who knows.Moribunny wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 7:59 pmI do tend to avoid the "Look Who's Talking Nows" altogether, and I have noticed that it messes up my rankings because movies I think are perfectly alright are getting pushed to under my 50% percentile. Re: The ten lowest-scoring directors
1010 films rated, which is about half or so of films actually watched over a lifetime, minimum 3 films
Aldrich and Van Sant are mild surprises. Almost all the rest are forgettable names to me with the exception of Luc Besson. The films are in order of best to worst.
10. Robert Aldrich (39.7)
3 films -- The Big Knife, Emperor of the North Pole and The Dirty Dozen
9. John Crowley (38.3)
3 films -- Boy A and two I didn't care for, Brooklyn and Closed Circuit
8. Adam McKay (38)
3 films -- The Big Short, Vice and the one that really hits his average, Step Brothers
7. Edgar Wright (36.3),the only one whose average isn't being pulled in any direction by extreme results
3 films -- Last Night in Soho, Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz
6. Luc Besson (34.7), the only name I was confident to see on this list
3 films -- Léon: The Professional (which I like quite a bit), Lucy and The Fifth Element (which I hate quite a lot)
5. Gus Van Sant (34.5), a bit of a surprise
4 films -- Drugstore Cowboy (a great favourite of mine), Good Will Hunting, and two dragging his rating down in Paranoid Park and Milk
4. Kevin MacDonald (32.7)
3 films -- The Last King of Scotland, The Eagle and Touching the Void
3. Michael Gondry (31.3)
3 films -- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is doing sterling work pushing that average up, Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet
2. Frank Oz (18)
3 films -- Death at a Funeral, The Score and Bowfinger
1. Barry Levinson (17)
3 films -- The Bay, Diner and The Natural
