Centipede is a vertically oriented fixed shooter arcade game produced by Atari, Inc. in 1980. It was one of the most commercially successful games from the video arcade's golden age. The player fights off centipedes, spiders, scorpions and fleas, completing a round after eliminating the centipede that winds down the playing field. Centipede was ported to Atari's own Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, and Atari 8-bit family. (Wikipedia.org)

Early video games were both glitchier than we remember and more difficult, since you basically had to spent hours in intense eye-hand coordination while battling zombie enemies. Centipede upped the ante with a more complex board and more difficult levels, so you can end up spending days or weeks of your life without showering while you try to beat it. At least it no longer costs a quarter (probably $1.50 in today's money) to get slaughtered by pixels.

A fast-paced shooter with more strategy to it than most of this vintage.
