On each player's turn, they can either place a share of one of five companies up for auction, build track (represented by cubes) in one of these five companies, upgrade a town to a city, or call for dividends. The dividends are paid out to shareholders of certain railroads based on how many cities/towns they connect to and how many shares of this company have been issued. I have a friend who still brings up the time he invested in a line I was the only investor in. I put exactly 0 resources into that line but kept saying I would help. He basically spent half the game giving me extra points. That was a big learning experience for all of us. If you are in a group project, do not put in any effort if one or more equal parties is also putting in no effort, you will lose. Group projects pay dividends. Having someone do all the work in a group project is free profit.
