(Originally released on the MSX console in 1987) Nemesis 2 (Gradius 2 in Japan) is a side-scrolling shoot-em-up. The gameplay is for the most part similar to that of Gradius. The player-controlled ship can alternate between three main weapons. In addition, special power-ups can be acquired. Boss battles are followed by optional mini-stages, which grant the player new weapons if completed successfully. (mobygames.com)

Harder than Gradius, but there's more interesting stuff going on in the levels and enemies, and the ability to choose a weapon loadout that meshes with your play style at least gives the illusion that what's about to happen is within your control. I don't think we'll ever get a Gradius that lives up to our expectations, but the legacy of 2's improvements are probably what kept this series as beloved as it is feared.
