Quest for Glory V: Dragon Fire

1998
Action, Role-Playing
Unlike previous entries in the series, Dragon Fire is primarily an action role-playing game with some adventure elements. The wizard Erasmus introduces the player character, the Hero, to the Greece-like kingdom of Silmaria, whose king was recently assassinated. Thus, the traditional Rites of Rulership are due to commence, and the victor will be crowned king. The Hero enters the contest. As the Rites commence, an unknown assassin begins systematically picking off the contestants. (wikipedia.org)

What a catastrophic failure. Everything that made the 2D Quest for Glory games successful was abandoned in an attempt to capitalise on a 3D action craze. This entry is ugly, dumb, and boring. It's a shame that this franchise ended in such a dumpster fire.

Yes, it suffers from the same issues that plague other 3D conversions like Mask or GK3. However, many of the familiar elements return. It's a good story, a great setting, and it's awesome to see characters from the franchise come together the way they did. That much makes it a fitting capstone to our hero's journey. If it were a standalone game, I'd agree with the critics.

Damn shame to see a series that I massively enjoyed for its first four games go out with this awkward entry. So many of these Sierra series just didn't translate well into the 3D age at all. Lacks the exploration or the charm or the fun of questing through Spielburg, Shapeir, Fricana or Mordavia in the first four games.
