Ultima is the first game in the Ultima series of role-playing video games created by Richard Garriott, officially released in 1981 The game has been completely re-coded and ported to many different platforms. The 1986 re-code of Ultima is the most commonly known and available version of the game.The game was one of the first definitive commercial computer RPGs, and is considered an important and influential turning point for the development of the genre throughout years to come.

It may be rough and somewhat goofy, but I do have to appreciate the ambition. There's a top-down map to wander about, first person dungeons to explore, and space-based arcade sections where you shoot down unlicensed TIE fighters(!)--that's quite a lot squeezed into a game from1981. Also, if you graft this game's style of exploration with Wizardry's combat system, you get the basic Dragon Quest formula that the console JRPG genre derives from.
